TH07 Cracked! Problems and Solutions with Concrete and Masonry HSW
05/15/2008, 7:00 AM - 8:00 AM

Learning Units: 1.00-Intermediate level

Training Units: 0.25-Training Area 9 (Specifications)

Architects inherently desire innovation in their designs; however, they often neglect to realize the limits of building materials. Innovative uses of concrete, stone, and masonry in building design will be explored, identifying the potential problems with each system and providing a practical guide to responsible exploration of these materials.

Learning Objectives:
  • Analyze concrete, stone, and masonry enclosure failure modes: efflorescence, thermal hysteresis, corrosion, leakage, structural failure
  • Review how to make Ando Concrete by avoiding surface defects and discoloration
  • Explore innovations in enclosure systems, including self-consolidating concrete and translucent stone walls designed to resist an explosive blast
Speakers: Patrick J. Loughran, AIA, PE, LEED AP

Provider: Goettsch Partners, Architecture, Interiors, Planning, Enclosures
