TH28 Architecture and Human Rights: Shelter, Justice, and Ethics HSW
05/15/2008, 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

Learning Units: 1.50-Entry level

Training Units: 0.375-Training Area 17 (Ethics and Practice)

The AIA Code of Ethics states, "Architects should uphold human rights in all their professional endeavors." But have we, or our projects, ever crossed the line? What needs to be done to fully deliver on the promise of universal human rights in the built environment? Can a building itself violate human rights? Speakers from architecture and legal organizations will consider the intersection of architecture practice and international norms of justice in today's increasingly complex world.

Learning Objectives:
  • Explain the fundamental concepts of human rights as applied to the built environment
  • Analyze existing and proposed built projects within a human rights framework
  • Identify aspects of architecture practice that enhance or subtract from the realization of universal human rights
Speakers: Chester W. Hartman; Shayana Kadidal; Kathryn T. Prigmore, FAIA, NOMA, LEED AP; and Raphael Sperry, AIA, LEED AP

Provider: Architects/Designers/Planners for Social Responsibility

TH28 Thursday, 2-3:30 p.m.
