TH60 From Candy to Chromosomes: Creating a World-Class Biotech Lab HSW
05/15/2008, 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM

Learning Units: 1.50-Intermediate level

Training Units: 0.375-Training Area 1 (Programming)

This is the story of the transformation of the historic Necco candy factory in Cambridge into a world-class biotechnology research center. Using an innovative new process, the 500,000-square-foot project was designed, documented, constructed, and commissioned in a mere 16 months and was delivered well under budget. The project won Lab of the Year honors in 2005 as well as the Business Week/Architectural Record design award in 2006.

Learning Objectives:
  • Review key design parameters for biotech labs, especially in renovation projects
  • Summarize how an integrated project delivery was used to accelerate the schedule, control the cost, and enhance the design quality
  • Indicate from first-hand reports from the architect, owner, engineer, and contractor how the project was executed
Speaker: Scott Simpson, FAIA, LEED AP

Provider: KlingStubbins
