Listening is one of the architect's most effective tools of engagement. This session explores the crucial yet often overlooked skill of listening in an architectural context. Few would argue that architects need to be good listeners, yet design professionals receive almost no training in how to be one. This session explores the problem of listening, defines good listening, and conveys specific strategies to enhance listening skills.
Learning Objectives:
- Inventory several methods for diagnosing a lack of effective listening skills in your professional and personal lives
- List the essential features of empathetic listening, an approach that places primary emphasis on valuing the input of others as a key to successful listening
- Assemble a set of 10 specific skills and strategies to improve your listening ability in almost any situation
