WE64 Adjusting to the Shifts: Impact on Tomorrow's Designs, Building Performance and Practice
05/14/2008, 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Learning Units: 3.75-Entry level

Training Units: 0.9375-Training Area 1 (Programming)

Based upon the book, Nine Shift: Work, Life, and Education in the 21st Century, participants will briefly explore the forces that restructure society in the new economic era. Technology and societal shifts will be reviewed with discussion focused on how seven of the nine shifts relate to the practice of architecture. Participants will participate in group discussions based on project types such as commercial, residential, mixed-use facilities, medical facilities, and educational facilities. Discussion will concentrate on how each group will be affected by the changes in the way we will work, live, and learn by the year 2020 and how these changes affect design, building performance, and practice. Groups will look at various project types over 3-, 5-, and 10-year projections. Participants will be asked to relate each shift to a project type in which they are currently involved. This session will be a highly interactive involving small peer groups.

Learning Objectives:
  • List at least three shifts that affect design over the next 3-5 and 10 years
  • Relate at least three design, building performance, and practice issues to each of the identified shifts
  • Apply one shift to a current project
