TG05 Run for Humanity: Charles River 5K Run/Walk
05/16/2008, 7:30 AM - 10:00 AM

Run/Walk Tour

There are few better places in Boston for a springtime, morning run than the Charles River Esplanade. This built landscape was first a tidal marsh, then a Native American fishing weir, a fetid mill pond, and, finally, a premeir public park. Its design in 1892 was the work of noted landscape architects Charles Eliot and Arthur Shurcliff, both of whom had apprenticed with Frederick Law Olmsted, and by the architect and landscape architect Guy Lowell. In 1941 the construction of the Hatch Memorial Shell added a first-class stage for popular summer events. Half a million people attend the annual Boston Pops concert and fireworks on Independence Day. Our 5K loop will start at the Hatch Memorial Shell and circle the Esplanade Lagoons. Along the way will be glimpses of the Bunker Hill Monument, the Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge, the Boston Museum of Science, the Longfellow (Salt & Pepper) Bridge, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology before finishing at the Hatch Shell. The race will start promptly at 8 a.m. Participants should check in by 7:30 a.m. The Hatch Shell is accessible by a 10-minute walk from the Charles Street Station on the Red Line or the Arlington Street Station on the Green Line. The $25 entry fee will provide each participant with a race T-shirt and a chance at the race and raffle prizes. Proceeds of this race will go to the Boston Chapter of Architects for Humanity.
