Learning Units: 3.00-Walking Tour
Training Units: 0.75-Training Area 6 (Code Research)
Boston prides itself on being one of America's great walking cities. The major new state and city initiatives of the Rose Kennedy Greenway and the Boston Harborwalk offer an opportunity to consider the role of pedestrian design as the connective tissue of the public realm. This tour will analyze how successful the projects are as examples of places that meet the legal requirements for accessibility but go beyond them to welcome a wide range of users. The morning begins with leaders from both projects creating a context for understanding the projects and the competing priorities that shape outcomes. The walk will illustrate the good, the bad, and the missed opportunities. Continental breakfast at the Institute of Human Centered Design is included.
Learning Objectives:
- Review current federal requirements for accessible pedestrian design
- Illustrate actual examples of accessible pedestrian design that depict a spectrum of outcomes
- Propose strategies for making the pedestrian a more influential priority in public realm design
