05/14/2008, 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM

Learning Units: 7.00-Bus and Walking Tour
Training Units: 1.00-Training Area 17 (Historic Restoration)

We travel to New Haven to visit two Louis I. Kahn buildings with special guest lecturer Carter Wiseman, author of Louis I. Kahn, A Life in Architecture: Beyond Time and Space. Our first stop is the recently restored Yale University Art Gallery, a landmark building from 1953, recently restored in 2006 by the Polshek Partnership of New York City. Our next and final stop will be the Yale University Center for British Art, the last building Kahn designed and home to the most comprehensive collection of British Art outside the United Kingdom, presented to the university by Paul Mellon.

Time for viewing the collections will be allowed; lunch included. This tour is offered in partnership with AIA Connecticut. Lunch is included.

Learning Objectives:
  • List two examples of modern architecture in the second half of the 20th century and evaluate each building's capacity to meet the mission of its occupant
  • Explain how renovation of a building can return it to the architect's original conception
  • Identify at least two of the design and technical challenges involved in renovating or restoring an iconic building
