TP07 Way Out West: MassMoCA and the New Center for Theatre and Dance at Williams College HSW
05/14/2008, 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM

Learning Units: 7.00-Bus and Walking Tour
Training Units: 1.75-Training Area 17 (Historic Restoration)
Join this tour to Western Massachusetts. Our first stop will be the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (Mass MoCA), the extraordinary new center for contemporary art in North Adams. Then we travel to Williams College's new Center for Theatre and Dance.

Tour participants will examine the creative, technical, and cost-effective design elements of Mass MoCA and discuss the impact on the local economy since its opening. Designed by Bruner/Cott, it is the largest contemporary art museum in the United States. Built on the site of the 19th century Sprague Electric Company, the 13-acre complex includes 28 buildings linked by a series of covered bridges and totals 750,000 square feet. The museum has a variety of exhibition, performance, and studio art spaces.

After time to view exhibitions and lunch, we travel further west to Williams College to tour its new Center for Theatre and Dance. Designed by William Rawn Associates, this new facility provides a state-of-the-art and picturesque backdrop for study, rehearsal, and performance. The center, opened in 2005, houses the 550-seat proscenium MainStage Theatre, the 200-seat renovated Adams Memorial Theatre, and the 200-seat adaptable CenterStage. Randy Wilmot, AIA, of William Rawn Associates will lead this part of our tour. Lunch is included.

Learning Objectives:
  • Examine a wide range of approaches to renovating 19th century industrial spaces such that a full range of contemporary art can be fully supported
  • Analyze the role of design in addressing complex technical needs of large-scale art presentation within limited financial resources
  • Explore state-of-the-art performance facilities for dance and theater that support teaching functions and community programming in a college setting
