TP29 Hip Davis Square HSW
05/14/2008, 12:00 PM - 5:30 PM

Learning Units: 4.00-Subway and Walking Tour
Training Units: 1.00-Training Area 15 (Office Management)

Join architects from Arrowstreet on a tour of wonderful Davis Square. Find out why the Utne Reader called it one of the 15 hippest places to live in the United States. We will take the Silver Line to the Red Line, demonstrating just how easy it is to travel from Boston's waterfront to the heart of Somerville. We begin with a reserved lunch with your colleagues at one of the Square's ethnic restaurants-Indian, Tibetan, Irish, and down-home Southern barbecue.

Learn first-hand why design is now a mini-industry composed of architects, graphic designers, and artists in this thriving neighborhood including offices of J. Stewart Roberts Associates, Mostue & Associates, and Charles Rose Architects. We will stop at several firms where you will get to meet people working in large and small firms on a full range of projects, including housing, commercial, civic, and nonprofit. The tour includes the option to tour Trolley Square, a new affordable housing project located on the Cambridge/Somerville line, adjacent to the Minuteman Bikeway, a wonderful trail that starts in Davis Squarel. We wrap up the afternoon with a cocktail at Arrowstreet, one of the largest architecture firms in Greater Boston with projects that include hotel, mixed-use, housing, retail, and institutional. Lunch and cocktails are included.

Learning Objectives:
  • Observe the workplaces of award-winning architecture firms and meet with their leaders in order to understand business strategies appropriate to targeted markets and a firm's design strengths
  • Analyze the differences in business models among several architecture firms
  • Explore a revitalized urban center in a classic New England "streetcar suburb" that is a node of design firm activity
