TH06 Environmental Delight: Pleasure, Beauty and Equity for All HSW
05/15/2008, 7:00 AM - 8:00 AM

Learning Units: 1.00-Intermediate level

Training Units: 0.25-Training Area 2 (Site and Environmental Analysis)

Many buildings give scant attention to the environment as a source of delight, even though it is a cornerstone of architectural theory. Let's look at delight from the eyes of the user: what building features and attributes do people find especially pleasurable and why? What is the value of emotional experience? Through multidisciplinary research we'll build the case that positive emotional response to environments is integral to human health and well being.

Learning Objectives:
  • Incorporate ideas and concepts from this presentation into your design approach to increase the likelihood of improved health and well being for occupants of your buildings
  • Evaluate design alternatives from the perspective of human well being and positive emotional experience and to build the case to clients regarding why the sense of delight should be an integral part of all building designs
  • Create a multiplicity of approaches to environmental delight drawing on the full spectrum of design tools and themes, including spatial elements, sensory variability, and biophilic features
