This session will discuss how several architecture firms are achieving the AIA fossil fuel reduction goal in their design projects. It will show how they reduced energy use as compared to Commercial Building Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS) “average building” reference and demonstrate how to document energy use intent to inform the commissioning process and building operation. It will also discuss how to help clients track energy performance for operating buildings and provide feedback if the design intent actually met the desired operating goal.

Learning Objectives:
  • Explore tools and resources that help set energy performance targets for building designs that meet the AIA fifty percent (energy use from burning) fossil fuel reduction goal,
  • Illustrate how architecture firms who participated in 2008 ENERGY STAR Challenge were able to achieve energy targets for design projects that meet industry goals, and
  • Discuss the importance of tracking energy use in operating building performance targets and identify ways to close the loop between energy estimates and the building’s actual operation.
