With demographic changes, and movements of people due to globalization of business and communications, we are now likely to see more diversity in clients and communities we serve. Cultural competence is an architect's tool to understand and balance user needs and preferences with their environments. Effective techniques for communicating, programming, and designing using human factors correlated to behavioral needs and well being are presented in an interactive format with exercises and examples.

Learning Objectives:
  • Describe the diversity of your clients and users and recognize how their culture and behavior impact communication for programming and design
  • List effective ways of interacting with diverse clients for understanding the client and user's nature, culture and values, user needs, and design influences
  • Create a human factors checklist that correlates the user needs data with the physical design requirements for buildings and landscape
