EX14 The State Department’s Barrier-Free Accessibility Program

Although the Department of State Office of Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO) continues on course with an ambitious program to replace a significant number of Diplomatic facilities worldwide, not all will be replaced. To resolve accessibility issues at many of these existing locations, the State Department recently created an internal program for barrier-free accessibility improvements. The presentation offers insight to normal federal requirements for barrier-free accessibility and how the Department applies these requirements, the impact of laws of other countries, the application of the criteria to the Department’s various building types, policies and procedures used by the Department, and the goals for removing barriers at US diplomatic posts worldwide.

  • Explore barrier-free accessibility goals through State Department policy and program initiatives.
  • Review federal accessibility laws and guidelines, their applicability and the State Department’s interpretation of them in making US diplomatic facilities accessible.
  • Identify strategies and solutions employed by OBO to successfully integrate barrier-free accessibility improvements in our existing diplomatic facilities.
