TH09 The Invisible City: Enhancing the Land Through Underground Interventions HSW
05/15/2008, 7:00 AM - 8:00 AM

Learning Units: 1.00-Advanced level

Training Units: 0.25-Training Area 4 (Engineering Systems Coordination)

Opportunities exist to develop more intensive spaces below ground for both service systems and other uses. Contemporary construction and tunneling technologies offer new opportunities to create useable and pleasant spaces below grade-spaces that can relieve the development pressure on the ground plane. Hear how recent planning and design work at several American universities and hospitals has helped preserve the ground plane and put appropriate uses underground. Two of these institutions, Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, are in the vicinity of the AIA convention and serve as case studies for improving aesthetics, circulation, and safety on the ground.

Learning Objectives:
  • Assess the potentials for underground space use and the benefits that can accrue to design of the ground plane
  • More creatively serve your clients' space needs
  • Effectively plan and design service systems and networks
