Downtown Crossings Boston is this classic American city's commercial and retail core. Sitting atop the intersection of four subway lines, surrounded by local and national retailers, Downtown Crossings has the elements needed for successful urban retail-but it is not. Newbury Street, Boylston Street, and even Copley Square are retail successes, while Downtown Crossing is mired in mediocrity. Today Downtown Crossings is undergoing a surge of planning to improve and strengthen this prime retail center.

Learning Objectives:
  • Identify key issues in the success or failure of the Downtown Crossings project in comparison to similar retail locations in the Boston area
  • Identify and develop an understanding of patterns of consumer behavior in a variety of retail environments
  • Assess the long-term implication of market, design, and development strategies on the success or failure of any retail-based project
