TP06 Poetry and Privacy: Unique Private Residences in Amherst, Massachusetts HSW NWA
05/14/2008, 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM

Learning Units: 7.00-Bus and Walking Tour
Training Units: 1.50-Training Area 17 (Interior Design)

Amherst, Massachusetts boasts a range of unique private residences—both contemporary and historic. The tour includes the home of renowned poet Emily Dickinson, a Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian house, the Souweine Residence (subject of Tracy Kidder's book House) and a live/work house designed by Sigrid Miller Pollin, AIA. All of these homes are clear examples of a strong relationship between interior space and the beauty of the western Massachusetts landscape.

We begin in Amherst with a docent led tour of Emily Dickinson’s house and gardens. We then visit the 1290 House in Amherst, a new live/work residence designed by Sigrid Miller Pollin, AIA, where we will also have lunch. After lunch, we will visit the Souweine Residence designed by William Rawn, FAIA. On our last stop, we visit the Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian house, led by Tim Rohan, architectural historian and professor at the University of Massachusetts - Amherst, who lives there. Lunch is included.
