TP11 North to New Hampshire, Kahn, and Wright HSW
05/14/2008, 8:30 AM - 6:00 PM

Learning Units: 7-Bus and Walking Tour
Training Units: 1.75-Training Area 17 (Historic Restoration)

This tour will take you north to New Hampshire to visit three important sites: the Kahn Library, the Zimmerman House, and the Currier Museum of Art. The Kahn Library, located on the campus of Phillips Exeter Academy, is one of the country's most extraordinary buildings. Designed by Louis I. Kahn, FAIA, and completed in 1971, it was one of his last major works. We will enjoy a rare opportunity to tour the library and learn more about its creation, an effort made by the academy trustees over many years.

We continue to Manchester, N.H., to the Currier Art Museum, established in 1929 by benefactors Moody and Hannah Currier in a neighborhood filled with the homes of Manchester's mill owners. The museum has just reopened following a $21 million expansion project designed by Boston's Ann Beha Architects. There will be time to view the collection and have lunch.

Tour participants will also visit Frank Lloyd Wright's Zimmerman House, one of two residences in New England designed by the acclaimed American architect and open to the public. Wright designed the Zimmerman House in 1950, planning its gardens, its built-in and freestanding furniture, its textiles, and even the mailbox. The Zimmerman House offers a glimpse into the 1950s-1960s, and the private lives of Isadore and Lucille Zimmerman, who lived in the home for 36 years.

This tour is offered in parntership with AIA New Hampshire. Lunch is included.

Learning Objectives:
  • Discover how the Currier Museum was reestablished through architecture and new landscape expression, extending the museum's impact on the community
  • Analyze how the design team balanced preservation and contemporary design within a historic neighborhood, including detailed information on the design and community process
  • Explore the design elements of the Kahn Library, winner of the 1997 AIA Twenty Five Year award
