Learning Units: 7.00-Train, Walking, and Bus
Training Units: 2.00-Training Area 17 (Planning)

This tour will takes us to Providence, R.I., via the high speed Acela out of South Station. In just 35 minutes, we will whisk you from Boston to the heart of this extraordinary reinvented city located on three rivers. Join top representatives from the Capitol Center Commission on a walking tour through the historic Capitol Center District as they address the renaissance taking place within the city. Stopping points will include the GTECH Center, the area's first new office development in nearly two decades designed by Spagnolo Gisness & Associates Inc. and William Warner's celebrated Waterplace Park, home of the internationally renowned Waterfire event. After a complimentary lunch and presentation, you will go on to meet members of the Down City Commission while strolling along famous Westminster Street. Participants will enjoy learning about the city's bold choice to relocate its river and how this helped reclaim Providence's unique urban waterfront. We then visit Rhode Island School of Design's new library, located on the river and designed by Boston's Office dA. The last leg of our trip will be a bus tour of Brown University's campus with time to enjoy the campus green. Members of Brown's design and planning team will tell us about some of the projects now in construction. You will enjoy the chance to relax with your colleagues on the return trip to Boston's South Station. Don't be late, train departs at 9:15 a.m. sharp. Lunch is included.

Learning Objectives:
  • Analyze the role of the Capitol Center Commission and Down City Partners in revitalizing the historic Capitol Center District in downtown Providence
