| TP32 From the USS Constitution to the Ropewalk: Creative Reuse of the Old Charlestown Navy Yard HSW 05/14/2008, 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM Learning Units: 3.00-Boat and Walking Tour Training Units: 1.00-Training Area 17 (Historic Restoration) This tour will arrive at the Charlestown Navy Yard by boat and proceed on a walking tour along the waterfront. David Carlson, AIA, executive director of the Boston Civic Design Commission, will describe the rich history of Navy Yard, including its decommissioning in 1974 and subsequent planning that culminated in award-winning master plans in 1978 and 1990. These efforts have resulted in one of the most successful historic rehabilitiation and preservaton projects in the United States. We will see examples where public/private partnerships and investments have created projects that include housing, retail, office, and public recreational uses. The tour will also explore the relationship between the public realm investments and private development. Harbor planning has been recently updated with a revised way of looking at the uses along the edge and interpreting the site's history in a meaningful way; new projects are complete such as Harborview Point or under way such as the relocation of the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital to the Yard's End. We will return through the Historic Monument area to the National Park parcel and end with an optional visit to the Constitution Museum or the USS Constitution. Learning Objectives:
