TP37a A Tour of Genzyme Center, Schlumberger-Doll and Kendall Square HSW
05/14/2008, 2:00 PM - 5:30 PM

Learning Units: 3.00-Subway and Walking Tour
Training Units: 0.75-Training Area 17 (Energy Conservation)

Located in the heart of Kendall Square, Cambridge's epicenter for the biotechnology, Genzyme Center creates a dramatic statement. Our first stop, this 350,000-square-foot building is corporate headquarters for one of the world's leading biotech companies. Designed by Behnisch, Behnisch + Partner of Stuttgart, Germany, and opened to the public in 2000, Genzyme Center was the first building to receive LEED platinum status in Cambridge, Mass. We will view its 12-story atrium topped with seven heliostats tracking and redirecting sunlight and some of of the center's 18 gardens. Genzyme estimates the building uses 34 percent less water than a conventional office building through a careful combination of design and water-saving technology like dual-flush toilets, waterless urinals, and moisture sensors in the landscaping. A unique cooling system uses waste steam from a nearby power plant to cool the building. More than 75 percent of all materials used in the building contain recycled content and 50 percent of all materials coming from local sources.

We then travel by foot from Genzyme to One Kendall Square, the western edge of this district. Along the way, TRO/Jung Brannen will take us inside the new 180,000-square-foot headquarters of Schlumberger-Doll Research, the world's leading oil field services provider. Planned to accommodate future use with maximum flexibility, the facility is composed of 55 unique state-of-the-art research and development laboratories, collaboratory think tank, three-story winter garden, 220-seat auditorium, fitness center, library, conference rooms, cafeteria, private offices, and intern stations. We will view the mixed-uses of One Kendall where Cambridge's entrepeneurs meet for billiards, gourmet coffee, art films, and conversation.

We will travel to and from Kendall Square using public transportation, in the spirit of "keeping it green."

Learning Objectives:
  • Examine the use of state-of-the-art technology in green building design
  • Analyze the relationship between Genzyme Center and the surrounding built environment, the epicenter of biotechnology in Cambridge
  • Investigate the use of design to articulate a corporation's aspirations and culture of innovation and invention
