| TP41a Learning in the Longwood Medical Area: Three Case Studies in Design for Higher Education HSW NWA 05/14/2008, 2:00 PM - 6:00 PM Learning Units: 3.00-Walking Tour Training Units: 0.75-Training Area 17 (Planning) The Longwood Medical Area, home to world-class medical institutions, is also home to eight colleges and universities. We will visit three of them: Harvard's School of Public Health, the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, and Simmons College. Our tour begins at the front door of Harvard's School of Public Health. The Francois Xavier Bagnoud building was extremely challenging to design and build. Architects from Payette will share how they used a unigue, triangular site with no lay-down space. We will learn how the design team helped the School of Public Health create a major presence on Huntington Avenue, a major urban axis in Boston. Architects from Steffian Bradley Architects then lead us through the new Academic and Student Center at the College of Pharmacy. This six-story building replaces two small parking lots and a monumental stair, the school's former "front yard." The center's design acknowledges the college's historic roots, preserving the original façade in a transparent atrium. The atrium spans the new and old, creating a "crystalline jewel box," now the hub of the campus. Our third stop is Simmons College. Slated for completion in December 2008, the School of Management articulates Simmons's role as the premier authority on leadership for women in business. Cannon Design architects will share how this project represents the latest chapter in the rapid evolution of this urban campus. The construction method is unique: five stories of academic building, bottom up; and simultaneously five stories of underground parking, top down. The underground garage will have a green roof in the form of a beautiful campus quad. Learning Objectives:
