TP45a Boston's Chinatown in the 21st Century HSW
05/14/2008, 2:15 PM - 5:45 PM

Learning Units: 3.00-Walking Tour
Training Units: 0.75-Training Area 17 (Planning)

Boston's Chinatown retains its distinction as one of the few remaining residential Chinatowns in the United States. A dynamic combination of commerce, housing, and community institutions, Chinatown faces intense development pressures. The Asian Community Development Corporation (ACDC) is a leading advocate for this neighborhood, fighting to retain and enhance the quality of life for residents. The ACDC will provide an overview of Chinatown's current challenges and opportunities. We will view a short set of films from A Chinatown Banquet, a documentary project that explores important themes in this community's history.

We will then tour the Metropolitan, an extraordinary mixed-use project design by The Architectural Team (TAT) and located in the heart of Chinatown's residential streets. The ACDC worked with TAT in all phases of its design and development.

We then walk through Chinatown to our second stop, Archstone Boston Common designed by ADD Inc. Completed in 2007, this 28-story development includes a residential tower with hotel-style lobbies and offers extensive amenities, including an indoor pool, a game room, a catering kitchen, and dining room-a package that influenced subsequent projects in the Boston area.

Learning Objectives:
  • Examine the challenges of developing large-scale projects in a physically dense and socially complex community
  • Contrast and compare the work of a community development corporation with private development
  • Define approaches to high-rise development using green technologies, new materials, and innovative approaches to building program
