Learning Units: 3.75-Entry level

Children and youth are the inheritors and the leaders of our communities for the future. Yet they are routinely left out of the processes in which these communities are defined and designed. However, several notable organizations work to break through this barrier by engaging young people in design activities and training. What are successful strategies for involving youth in design and planning and how can professionals benefit by learning from and preparing the next generation?

Learning Objectives:
  • Explore successful examples of youth participation in design and planning
  • Identify helpful guidelines, tools, and strategies for working with youth on design and planning activities
  • Practice engaging with youth on a design exercise
Speakers: Polly Carpenter, AIA; Simon Hare, Assoc. AIA, LEED AP; and Ann Sussman, RA
