Learning Units: 3.00-Walking Tour
Training Units: 0.75-Training Area 17 (Planning)
Explore the City of Boston with Robert A. Brown, AIA, IIDA, of CBT Architects on this tour of some of Boston's iconic buildings-both at street level and at the skyline. Rising above the urban environment by elevator, take in views that reveal the city and its development in context. Consider also how these buildings are grounded in their lobbies, space that reflects the sophistication of each building's design and materials used. Beginning at City Hall Plaza and continuing into the heart of the Financial District, you will experience 360-degree views of Faneuil Hall Marketplace, the Boston Harbor, the Financial District, and, at a distance, the Seaport District.
The tour includes stops at Boston City Hall, Custom House, 2 International Place, and the Federal Reserve Building. In addition, we will encounter the essence of Boston's economic livelihood as you walk amongst these downtown buildings. Boston's towers are not only designed to enliven the skyline, they are designed to promote a pedestrian-friendly, urban environment.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify at least three of Boston's iconic buildings and recognize patterns in the city's historic development from an aerial perspective
- Discover how Boston's towers punctuate and promote a pedestrian-friendly urban environment
- Recognize the importance of materials and craftsmanship in designing signature lobby space and summarize the process of marble selection
